How much?

Dad sent me this mail and i thought i have to share it with all of you!

Hi Everybody, Over the weekend, I filled up my car's fuel tank, and I thought fuel has become really expensive after the recent price hike. But then I compared it with other common liquids and did some quick calculations, and I felt a little better.

To know why, see the results below – you'll be surprised at how outrageous some other prices are !

Diesel (regular) in Mumbai : Rs.36.08 per litre
Petrol (speed) in Mumbai : Rs.52 per litre
Coca Cola 330 ml can : Rs.20 = Rs.61 per litre
Dettol antiseptic 100 ml Rs.20 = Rs.200 per litre
Radiator coolant 500 ml Rs.160 = Rs.320 per litre
Pantene conditioner 400 ml Rs..165 = Rs.413 per litre
Medicinal mouthwash like Listerine 100 ml Rs.45 = Rs. 450 per litre
Red Bull 150 ml can : Rs.75 = Rs.500 per litre
Corex cough syrup 100 ml Rs.57 = Rs. 570 per litre
Evian water 500 ml Rs. 330 = Rs. 660 per litre
Rs. 500 for a litre of WATER???!!! And the buyers don't even know the source (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)
Kores whiteout 15 ml Rs. 15 = Rs. 1000 per litre
Cup of coffee at any decent business hotel 150 ml Rs. 175 = Rs. 1167 per litre
Old Spice after shave lotion 100 ml Rs. 175 = Rs. 1750 per litre
Pure almond oil 25 ml Rs. 68 = Rs. 2720 per litre

And this is the REAL KICKER...
HP deskjet colour ink cartridge 21 ml Rs.1900 = Rs. 90476 per litre!!!
Now you know why computer printers are so cheap ? So they have you hooked for the ink ! So, the next time you're at the pump, don't curse our honorable Petroleum minister – just be glad your car doesn't run on cough syrup, after shave, coffee, or God forbid, printer ink.

it is really interesting to 'again' become aware of the fact on how these marketing gimmicks get the better of us. The sad part is that most of us are aware of this exorbitant pricing but simply 'choose' to act oblivious to it.
It's a gr8 EYE OPENER...

Dear Bau
Great piece to read. I just wonder as to how much HP would be really spending in making the ink. They are just exploiting the fact that they have the knowledge. One would argue that thats the R&D cost. I would like to have a model where they give the ink for free and beg people for the R&D money. And I am sure some people will be generous enough to give them the money.

nice stats bau.
i have a nice discussion with my friends after reading that. also some interesting things came out. like if a 10-20% blend of ethanol in petrol could reduce the price even less and it is also more eco-friendly.

hmmm...
the joy of manipulating stats!

talking about usage,
i use rs.3 of pantene say 4 times a week.(rs.12 per week or a quarter)...

for a person commuting to work daily on a decent car with a strictly okay mileage would use 150-200 rs of petrol per day.. say about rs 1000 per week($25)

never in our lives would we use a litre of ink unless we work in some ansheri(e) printer..

add to it, bava has an amazing sense of humour so u could actually gimme stats to take the next flight to the restaurant at the end of dahisar...

so whats the std dev bau?

Jai Gurudev!!
this is the great example to look for positive side of every situation..... loved the stats a lot
the other products is being used by all of us but we never get into calculation in this manner ... so the bottom line that we should not crib over the price hike of petrol is explained so beautifully

Bawa u r simply GREAT!!!
